Preliminary studies and the shift towards yoga

Director and Founder The Mysore Shala. Authorized Teacher KPJAYI (Ashtanga Yoga Institute)

It is evident that we do not choose the paths of life, but that life chooses its own. My first vocation was as an architect and I had the opportunity to study at both the Madrid School of Architecture (UPM) and Westminster University in London. Within the profession I was initially interested in dedicating myself to the Rehabilitation and Restoration of Historical Heritage. However, the concerns and needs of modernity guided me to research on ecological and alternative urban systems. Thanks to this I had the opportunity to reside for a while in the city of Auroville in India and publish the research paper “The proposal of the utopian city in the Age of Globalization. The case of Auroville (India)” While I was developing my professional career as an architect in my own studio, yoga appeared completely unexpectedly in my life. Little by little it became a transforming practice that drastically and happily reoriented the course of my life.

Yoga grants you the possibility to manage the reins of your life, to be somehow the master of your own destiny. It is a long road that requires a great deal of patience and perseverance, but that same road is, without a doubt, provided with great beauty. It was after my first trip to India to study at the Ashtanga Yoga Institute in the city of Mysore under the tutelage of the great master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson Sharath that I decided to devote myself fully to teaching and transmitting that which had transformed my life (and that of so many others I had met). Little by little yoga was gaining ground in my old profession. Since then, I dedicated a great part of my time to train, travel and learn in the proximity of the great masters. India, Thailand, London and Madrid have been key milestones on this path.

On June 3, 2012 Urban Yoga was first opened in Madrid, renamed since 2019 as The Mysore Shala. In one of the most central, beautiful and dynamic places in the city. Already all my energy and time has been devoted to the teaching of Ashtanga Yoga. There are hundreds of students from more than 25 nationalities who have passed through the school. I continue to travel every year for 2 months to India to keep learning in Mysore directly from Sharath Jois (director of the Ashtanga Yoga Institute, KPJAYI) and to study the philosophy and tradition of India under which a great wisdom is enclosed. After introducing the teaching of Ashtanga Yoga to more than a thousand people and with more than 5000 hours of practice as a teacher, in January 2018 Sharath Jois granted me the Authorization (Level I) and his full confidence to continue the transmission of the teaching of Ashtanga Yoga with complete fidelity to the original method.

Ignacio de Frutos - Meditación. The Mysore Shala

Parallel to my practice of Ashtanga Yoga, a long training in Meditation and Mindfulness is developed using the tools inherited from Tibetan Buddhism. It is an intense and long way that has begun in the International Center of Buddhist Teachings (CIDEB) located in Pedreguer (Alicante) directed by the great master lama Rinchen Gyaltsen and that concludes in the International Buddhist Academy (IBA) in Kathmandu (Nepal).
